Justicia californica, commonly known as chuparosa or hummingbird bush, is a deciduous shrub native to the arid deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, particularly thriving in the Sonoran Desert. This hardy plant is well adapted to hot, dry environments, featuring slender, gray-green stems and small, scale-like leaves that reduce water loss and sometimes drop entirely during drought to conserve moisture. It is best known for its tubular, bright red to orange-red flowers, which appear primarily in late winter through spring, providing a critical nectar source for hummingbirds and other pollinators during the dry season when few other plants bloom. The flowers are typically about 2 inches long and grow in clusters, giving the shrub a striking display of color against the muted desert landscape. Justicia californica prefers full sun and well-drained, sandy or rocky soils and is highly drought tolerant, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping and wildlife gardens. While it can survive on minimal water, occasional deep watering during extended dry periods can encourage prolonged blooming. In addition to attracting hummingbirds, it supports bees and butterflies, enhancing desert biodiversity. This plant can grow up to 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, forming a loose, airy structure that provides shelter for small desert animals. Its ability to thrive in extreme heat and withstand neglect makes it a valuable ornamental species for sustainable landscaping in arid regions.
