Hamelia patens, commonly known as firebush or scarlet bush, is a vibrant, fast-growing evergreen shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, particularly Florida, Central America, and the Caribbean. This ornamental plant is highly valued for its clusters of tubular, bright red to orange flowers that bloom profusely throughout the year in warm climates, attracting a variety of pollinators such as butterflies, bees, and especially hummingbirds. Firebush typically grows between 4 to 12 feet tall, forming a dense, rounded shape with slender, arching branches and dark green leaves that may exhibit reddish or bronze hues when young or during cooler weather. In addition to its ornamental appeal, Hamelia patens produces small, dark purple to black berries that serve as a food source for birds and other wildlife. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of heat, drought, and poor soils once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for landscapes. Adaptable and resilient, firebush is an excellent addition to pollinator gardens, hedges, or naturalized areas, bringing year-round color and biodiversity to the landscape.
