Rhus trilobata, commonly known as three-leaf sumac, is a resilient, deciduous shrub native to western and central North America. It typically grows 2 to 6 feet tall and spreads widely via rhizomes, forming dense thickets ideal for erosion control and habitat restoration. The plant gets its common name from the distinctive, somewhat pungent odor emitted by its crushed leaves. Its trifoliate leaves resemble those of poison ivy but are not toxic, and they turn striking shades of red, orange, and gold in the fall. In spring, it produces small clusters of yellowish-green flowers that are followed by bright red, fuzzy berries in late summer. These tart berries are edible and were traditionally used by Native American tribes to make beverages. Rhus trilobata is highly drought-tolerant and thrives in a range of soils, including rocky and poor soils, making it well-suited to arid and semi-arid landscapes. Its value to wildlife is notable, providing food and cover for birds and small mammals, while also serving as a host plant for several butterfly species. Because of its ornamental foliage, fall color, and ecological benefits, three leaf sumac is increasingly used in xeriscaping, native plant gardens, and restoration projects across the western United States.
