Sphaeralcea coccinea, commonly known as the scarlet globemallow, is a low-growing, herbaceous perennial wildflower native to much of western and central North America, typically reaching about 6 to 18 inches in height and spreading 12 to 24 inches wide, though in favorable conditions it may form broader colonies several feet across. The plant arises from a deep, woody taproot that can extend several feet into the soil, enabling it to survive in dry, sandy, or rocky environments with minimal rainfall. Its slender, branching stems are often covered in fine, star-shaped hairs, giving the plant a grayish-green appearance, and they may sprawl or grow upright depending on exposure. The leaves are small to medium in size, generally about ½ to 2 inches long, rounded to shallowly lobed, and softly textured. Bright orange to reddish-orange flowers, each measuring roughly ½ to 1 inch across, bloom along the upper stems in loose clusters from spring through summer and sometimes into early fall, attracting pollinators such as bees. After flowering, the plant produces small, disk-shaped fruit capsules about ¼ inch in diameter, each composed of multiple segments containing tiny seeds. Sphaeralcea coccinea is well adapted to arid landscapes, combining modest stature with a spreading habit and vibrant floral display.
