The Golden Trumpet Tree is a beautiful tropical tree that has clusters of large, bright yellow flowers. It has a picturesque form with a leaning or crooked trunk and contorted branches. The trunk has thick, ridged bark and the branches are a good location for epiphytes to grow. The leaves are palmately compound and they have several thick, leathery leaflets with rusty-brown hairs. The flowers are fragrant and funnel-shaped and they attract butterflies and hummingbirds. After the flowers bloom, long, curved pods with brown hairs appear on the branches. When the pods open, they release numerous winged seeds. It is easy to grow and is often cultivated in South Florida and other warm regions for its spectacular display of flowers in the spring. Grows in full sun and part shade in well-drained soil and it does fine in sandy soils. They should be watered regularly during the spring and summer. Once they are established the trees are fairly tough and are tolerant of drought and salt spray. Native to Brazil.
Growing Instructions
Put a mixture of potting soil and sand or perlite into several pots. Put the seeds on the growing medium and cover them lightly with soil. Then put the pots in an area with bright light and in a temperate of 15-20 degrees C. Keep the soil moist but not wet. The seeds take 2-6 weeks to germinate.
