Quercus hemisphaerica, commonly referred to as Darlington oak or laurel oak, is a medium to large-sized deciduous to semi-evergreen tree native to the southeastern United States, ranging from North Carolina to Florida and westward to Texas. It typically grows between 40 and 75 feet tall, occasionally reaching greater heights under ideal conditions, and develops a straight trunk with a broad, rounded canopy. The tree is easily recognized by its smooth, narrowly lanceolate leaves that are dark green and glossy above, lighter beneath, and tend to remain on the tree well into the winter in mild climates. It thrives in dry, sandy upland soils, often on ridges or coastal plains, displaying notable drought tolerance once established. The small, hemispherical acorns mature in two seasons and are consumed by a variety of birds and mammals, contributing to local ecosystems. Its fast growth rate and tolerance for urban environments make it a popular choice for landscaping, street plantings, and shade trees.
