Viburnum trilobum – commonly known as Cranberrybush Viburnum – is a deciduous shrub native to North America, particularly found in moist woods, thickets, and along stream banks. It typically grows 8 to 12 feet tall and wide, forming a dense, rounded habit with attractive, three-lobed, maple-like leaves that turn shades of red to purple in autumn. In late spring, it produces showy clusters of white flowers, which attract pollinators and are followed by bright red, berry-like drupes in late summer to fall. These fruits persist into winter, providing food for birds and wildlife, though they are sour and somewhat bitter if eaten raw by humans. The berries, however, can be cooked into jams, jellies, and preserves, similar to cranberries. This hardy shrub is often used ornamentally for hedges, screens, or naturalized plantings, valued both for its ornamental qualities and its ecological benefits. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils but can adapt to a range of conditions.
