Quercus agrifolia, commonly known as the coast live oak, is an evergreen oak native to the coastal regions of California and northern Baja California. It typically grows 30 to 75 feet tall, with a broad, rounded crown and gnarled, spreading branches that create a dense canopy. The leathery, dark green leaves are oval with spiny margins, resembling those of holly, and remain on the tree year-round. Its acorns, an important food source for wildlife, mature in about a year and are produced abundantly. Adapted to the mild, Mediterranean climate, Quercus agrifolia thrives in a variety of soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established. It plays a key ecological role, providing habitat and shade for numerous species and contributing to the character of California’s oak woodlands and coastal landscapes.
