Caulophyllum thalictroides, commonly known as blue cohosh, is a perennial, herbaceous plant native to the deciduous forests of eastern North America. It grows from a thick, rhizomatous rootstock and typically reaches 30–60 cm in height. The plant features large, pinnately compound leaves that resemble those of meadow-rue, giving it a delicate, fern-like appearance. In spring, Caulophyllum thalictroides produces small, greenish-yellow flowers arranged in loose clusters, which are followed by distinctive blue-purple berries in late summer. Preferring rich, moist, and well-drained woodland soils, it thrives in shaded environments under the forest canopy. Historically, blue cohosh has been used in traditional herbal medicine, though its roots and berries contain compounds that can be toxic if misused. Today, it is appreciated in native plant gardens and woodland plantings for its early spring blooms and attractive foliage.
