Impatiens capensis, commonly known as orange jewelweed, spotted touch-me-not, or wild balsam, is an annual herbaceous plant native to eastern North America and a member of the Balsaminaceae family. It typically grows 2 to 5 feet tall in moist, shaded habitats such as stream banks, wetlands, woodland edges, and damp meadows. The plant is easily recognized by its bright orange, trumpet-shaped flowers with distinctive red or brown spots and a long, curved spur that extends backward from the blossom, giving it a delicate, ornate appearance. Its translucent, succulent stems support broad, ovate leaves with finely toothed margins, and the plant reproduces through both seed and its characteristic explosive seed pods, which burst at the slightest touch to disperse seeds over several feet. Impatiens capensis thrives in rich, moist, well-drained soil and prefers partial to full shade, often forming dense colonies that provide important cover and nectar for pollinators such as bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Beyond its ecological value, it has a long history of traditional medicinal use; the crushed stems and leaves were applied to soothe skin irritations caused by poison ivy, insect bites, and minor burns. With its vivid, eye-catching blooms, rapid growth, and ecological significance, Impatiens capensis is a striking component of North American wetland and woodland ecosystems, combining ornamental charm with functional benefits for wildlife and natural landscapes.
