Lachnanthes caroliniana (Carolina Redroot), also known as Redroot, is an unusual and attractive perennial native to the southeastern United States, especially wet pine flatwoods, savannas, bogs, and other moist, sandy habitats. It forms a clumping growth of narrow, upright, blue-green leaves and produces slender flowering stems that can reach about 2–4 feet tall. In summer, the stems carry clusters of small yellow flowers, creating a pleasant contrast with the reddish stems and distinctive red-colored roots that give the plant its common name. Carolina Redroot is an interesting choice for native plant gardens, rain gardens, wet areas, and naturalized landscapes where consistent moisture is available. Its architectural foliage and unusual coloration make it especially appealing to collectors of native and uncommon plants.
