Plumeria rubra, commonly known as the frangipani or the red plumeria, is a tropical plant renowned for its fragrant and vibrant flowers. Here’s a detailed description:

Appearance:

Leaves: The leaves are thick, leathery, and lance-shaped, typically ranging from 12 to 16 inches long. They are arranged in clusters at the end of branches.

Flowers: The flowers are one of the most striking features. They are often a rich red color, but can also come in shades of pink, white, yellow, or even multicolored. Each flower has five petals and a central tube-like structure, with a sweet, heady fragrance that is particularly strong in the evening.

Growth Habit: Plumeria rubra is a small to medium-sized tree or shrub. It can reach heights of 10 to 30 feet (3 to 9 meters) with a spreading canopy. The plant has a somewhat irregular, rounded shape.

Cultivation:

Climate: It thrives in tropical and subtropical climates, where it enjoys plenty of sunlight and warmth. It is not frost-tolerant and generally needs temperatures above 50°F (10°C) to survive.

Soil: It prefers well-draining soil and can tolerate poor soil conditions, as long as there is good drainage. Sandy or loamy soils are ideal.

Watering: While it is somewhat drought-tolerant once established, regular watering is beneficial, especially during dry periods. However, overwatering can lead to root rot, so proper drainage is crucial.

Propagation: Plumeria rubra can be propagated from seeds or cuttings. Cuttings should be allowed to dry and callous before planting to reduce the risk of rot.

Uses and Significance:

Ornamental: It is widely grown as an ornamental plant for its beautiful and fragrant flowers. It is often used in tropical landscaping and as a decorative indoor plant in pots.

Cultural Significance: In many cultures, especially in Hawaii and other Pacific Islands, plumeria flowers are used in leis and have symbolic meanings, often representing beauty, love, and positivity.

Overall, Plumeria rubra is a cherished plant for its stunning floral display and delightful fragrance, making it a popular choice for gardens and decorative purposes in suitable climates.
