The Red Yucca is a member of the century plant family with yucca-like leaves and red flowers that are on long, slender stalks. The flowers are tubular and coral-red. The flower stalks are up to 5 feet tall. It is native to Texas and northeastern Mexico. Adaptable to a variety of soils. leaves are blue-green in summer and plum-colored in the winter. They have whitish fibers along the margins. The red yucca is grown as a drought resistant low-maintenance plant in warm regions and in desert regions in the southern United States. Hardy in zones 5-10.

 

Growing Instructions for the Red Yucca

 

  1. Soak the seed in water for several hours. 2. The seeds like moist, well-drained soil. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Put the soil in a pot. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet. 3. Put the seeds on the soil. 4. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. 5. Water the seeds. 6. Place the pots in an area with warm temperatures in full sun or part shade. The seeds usually take 4-6 weeks to germinate although some seeds may take much longer to germinate. 7. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted. Plant outdoors in a warm, well-drained area.
