Scutellaria drummondii, commonly known as Drummond’s skullcap, is a delicate perennial or subshrub in the mint family (Lamiaceae) native to the south-central United States, particularly Texas, and parts of northern Mexico. This low-growing plant typically forms small, spreading clumps with slender, square stems that may become somewhat woody at the base. Its leaves are opposite, narrow to lance-shaped, and lightly toothed, giving the foliage a soft, fine-textured appearance. In spring and early summer, Scutellaria drummondii produces an abundance of small but striking tubular flowers, usually in shades of violet-blue to purple, each with the distinctive “helmet” or “skullcap” shape that gives the genus its common name. These blooms are arranged loosely along the upper portions of the stems and are highly attractive to native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Adapted to well-drained sandy or rocky soils, the plant thrives in prairies, open woodlands, and disturbed areas, tolerating heat and drought once established. Its compact growth habit and extended flowering season make it a charming addition to native plant gardens, rock gardens, or xeriscapes, where it offers both ornamental beauty and ecological benefits.
