Gaura lindheimeri, commonly known as Lindheimer's beeblossom or white gaura, is a graceful, herbaceous perennial native to the southern United States and northern Mexico. Valued for its long blooming season and airy, delicate appearance, this plant brings movement and lightness to gardens with its slender, wand-like stems and fluttering white to pale pink flowers that resemble butterflies in flight. The blooms open in succession from early summer to fall, providing an almost continuous display that attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its narrow, lance-shaped leaves are typically green or sometimes tinged with red, and the plant itself forms loose, bushy clumps that sway gently with the wind, adding a dynamic quality to borders and wildflower plantings. Gaura thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, showing excellent drought tolerance once established, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping and low-maintenance gardens. It is also remarkably adaptable, tolerating heat, poor soils, and even some neglect, while still performing reliably with minimal care. Though short-lived in some climates, it readily reseeds or can be rejuvenated by trimming back older stems. Its natural, informal look makes it ideal for cottage gardens, prairie-style landscapes, and contemporary plantings alike, where it adds a whimsical charm and a touch of wild elegance.
