Sabal mexicana, widely known as Texas palmetto, Rio Grande palmetto, or Mexican palmetto, is a hardy, stately fan palm native to the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas and northeastern Mexico, where it inhabits floodplains, coastal prairies, and riparian woodlands. Distinguished by its broad, costapalmate fronds—typically 4–6 feet (1.2–1.8 m) long—this species forms a dense, rounded crown atop a single, robust gray trunk that can reach 40–50 feet (12–15 m) in height over many decades. The leaves, deeply segmented into stiff, elegantly arching leaflets, create a lush, tropical canopy that provides shelter and nesting habitat for birds and other wildlife. In late spring to summer, Sabal mexicana produces tall, arching inflorescences laden with small, creamy-white flowers rich in nectar, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; these are followed by clusters of black, berry-like drupes relished by birds and mammals. Adapted to heat, periodic drought, and brackish soils, it remains a dependable ornamental palm for warm regions, capable of handling brief cold snaps better than many tropical species. Whether used as a distinguished avenue planting, a focal point in public landscapes, or an ecological anchor in native habitat restoration, Sabal mexicana contributes both graceful structure and impressive durability to the environments it inhabits.
