Magnolia × soulangeana (Saucer Magnolia) is a stunning deciduous ornamental tree, widely cherished for its early spring display of large, tulip-shaped flowers that appear before the foliage emerges. This hybrid, a cross between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora, typically reaches heights of 4–8 meters (13–26 feet) with a broad, spreading crown that adds a dramatic architectural presence to gardens and landscapes. Its flowers are among the most striking features: 10–20 cm (4–8 inches) long, they come in shades of white, pink, and purple, often with a gradation of color that gives them a delicate, almost painted appearance. The leaves are oblong to elliptic, deep green, and glossy, turning yellowish in autumn before dropping, which provides a subtle seasonal interest. Magnolia × soulangeana prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils, showing moderate drought tolerance once established. While its growth is relatively fast for a magnolia, it can be prone to frost damage if early blooms coincide with late cold snaps, and it benefits from some protection against strong winds. Besides its horticultural appeal, the tree’s flowers are fragrant, attracting early pollinators such as bees, while its elegant form makes it a popular choice for parks, streetscapes, and private gardens where it is often planted as a specimen tree or as part of a mixed ornamental border. Careful pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape without sacrificing blooms, and with proper care, this hybrid can provide decades of seasonal beauty, offering one of the most celebrated floral displays of any temperate-zone tree.
