Pyracantha coccinea, commonly known as scarlet firethorn, is native from southeastern Europe to the Caucasus. It is an evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub that typically grows to 8-10' tall and to 12' wide. It is noted for spring white flowers in drooping clusters, glossy green leaves, needle-like spines, and orange-red berries in fall. Foliage is evergreen in mild climates, but semi-evergreen to mostly deciduous in temperate regions. Impenetrable shrub for informal hedges, hedgerows. dense screens or property lines. Also effective when massed to cover slopes. Group in shrub borders. Espaliers trained on wall or fence. Grown in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best in fertile soils with sharp drainage. Good tolerance for drought conditions.

Growing Instructions

The seeds have a dormancy period. They need a period of chilling which simulates winter conditions to break their dormancy.

1. Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours.
2. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet.
3. Put the seeds in the mixture.
4. Put the mixture in a ziplock bag.
5. Put the bag in the refrigerator and leave it there for 12 weeks.
6. Sow the seeds in pots with potting soil. Cover them with a thin layer of soil.
7. Water the seeds.
8. The seeds will sprout in 1 to 2 weeks.
9. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
