Native to the cool mountain forests of eastern North America, Picea rubens, commonly known as Red Spruce, is a graceful evergreen conifer prized for its rich green needles, classic pyramidal form, and exceptional cold hardiness. This stately tree develops a dense canopy of short, glossy needles that measure about 1/2 to 3/4 inch long, creating a soft textured appearance year-round. Mature trees typically reach 60 to 80 feet tall with a spread of 20 to 30 feet, though under ideal conditions they can grow even larger over time. Its reddish-brown bark becomes attractively scaly with age, adding ornamental interest through every season. Small cylindrical cones, usually 1 1/2 to 2 inches long, hang delicately from the branches and provide additional woodland charm. Red Spruce thrives in full sun to partial shade and performs best in moist, well-drained acidic soils, making it an excellent choice for privacy screens, windbreaks, reforestation projects, or large landscape specimens. Its symmetrical growth habit, fragrant evergreen foliage, and impressive longevity make Picea rubens a fine addition to parks, estates, and naturalized landscapes where a hardy and elegant native evergreen is desired.
