Rainbow Corn (Zea mays) is an heirloom variety grown for its colorful ears that display an incredible blend of red, blue, purple, yellow, orange, white, and pink kernels. Growing to a height of 6 to 10 feet, this warm-season annual produces sturdy stalks topped with attractive tassels and full ears measuring approximately 6 to 10 inches long. While commonly grown as an ornamental for fall displays, wreaths, and decorative arrangements, Rainbow Corn can also be ground into flavorful cornmeal, used for popcorn depending on the variety, or saved for seed. Easy to grow in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil, plants typically mature in 90 to 120 days and perform best when planted in blocks for optimal wind pollination. Space plants 8 to 12 inches apart in rows 30 to 36 inches apart to encourage healthy growth and abundant ear production. Drought tolerant once established and highly productive, Rainbow Corn is an excellent choice for home gardens, small farms, educational gardens, and ornamental landscapes. Its multicolored ears provide a spectacular harvest that is both beautiful and practical, making this unique heirloom a favorite among gardeners, crafters, and seed collectors alike.
