Fraxinus velutina, commonly known as velvet ash or Arizona ash, is a deciduous tree native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, particularly thriving in riparian zones, desert washes, and arid foothills. It typically grows 30 to 50 feet tall with a broad, rounded crown and a relatively fast growth rate, especially when water is available. The species is well adapted to hot, dry climates and is distinguished by its velvety-textured young twigs and leaf undersides, which give the tree its common name. Its leaves are pinnately compound, usually bearing five to seven leaflets that are dark green on top and covered with soft hairs below. In early spring, small, inconspicuous flowers bloom before the leaves appear, and female trees produce clusters of winged seeds (samaras) that are dispersed by wind. Fraxinus velutina has been widely planted in southwestern urban landscapes due to its ability to provide quick shade, tolerate heat, and grow in poor soils, though it benefits from occasional deep watering in dry conditions. While valued for its adaptability and low maintenance, it can develop a short lifespan and structural issues in overly irrigated or compacted urban soils. Ecologically, velvet ash provides food and shelter for various birds and insects and plays an important role in stabilizing stream banks and maintaining riparian biodiversity in desert regions.
