Acer buergerianum, commonly known as Trident Maple, is a species of maple native to eastern China, Korea, and Japan. This deciduous tree is appreciated for its attractive foliage, which turns vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow in autumn. The name "Trident Maple" comes from the three-lobed leaves, which resemble the prongs of a trident.

It's a popular choice for bonsai cultivation due to its small leaves and delicate branching structure. In landscaping, Trident Maple is valued for its tolerance of urban conditions, adaptability to various soil types, and moderate growth rate. It typically grows to a height of 25 to 35 feet (7.6 to 10.7 meters) with a spread of 25 to 35 feet (7.6 to 10.7 meters).

Trident Maple is often used as a street tree, in parks, and as a specimen tree in gardens. It's relatively low-maintenance but benefits from regular pruning to maintain its shape and promote healthy growth. Overall, it's a lovely ornamental tree with many desirable characteristics for both amateur and professional landscapers. Hardy in zones 4-9.

Growing Instructions

The seeds have a dormancy period. They need a period of chilling which simulates winter conditions to break their dormancy.

Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours.

Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet.

Put the seeds in the mixture.

Put the mixture in a ziplock bag.

Put the bag in the refrigerator and leave it there for 12 weeks.

Sow the seeds in pots with potting soil. Cover them with a thin layer of soil.

Water the seeds.

When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
