Lysiloma thornberi is a small deciduous tree or large shrub native to the arid and semi-arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, particularly in the Sonoran Desert. Belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae), it is characterized by its feathery, bipinnate leaves that provide a soft, airy texture, and its clusters of small, white, puffball-like flowers that appear in spring and early summer, attracting pollinators. The tree is often multi-trunked, with smooth, grayish bark and a spreading canopy that offers light shade, making it well adapted for desert landscapes. Like other legumes, Lysiloma thornberi is capable of fixing nitrogen in the soil, enhancing fertility in otherwise nutrient-poor environments. Its seed pods are slender, curved, and papery, turning brown as they mature and dispersing seeds readily. Highly drought-tolerant and resilient, it thrives in rocky, well-drained soils and is valued both for erosion control and as an attractive ornamental in xeriscaping.
