Fraxinus texensis, commonly known as Texas ash, is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to central and northern Texas and parts of Oklahoma, typically found growing on rocky limestone hillsides and well-drained soils. A member of the olive family (Oleaceae), this tree is closely related to white ash (Fraxinus americana) but is more compact and drought-tolerant, making it well-suited to the challenging conditions of its native range. It generally reaches heights of 30 to 50 feet, with a rounded canopy and a moderately fast growth rate. Its leaves are pinnately compound with 5 to 7 leaflets that turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and purple in the fall, giving the tree strong ornamental appeal. In spring, inconspicuous flowers appear before the leaves, and female trees produce samaras—winged seeds that are dispersed by wind. Texas ash is a valuable landscape tree for urban settings and naturalistic plantings due to its adaptability, low water requirements, and resistance to many pests and diseases. Its dense wood has traditionally been used for tool handles and other utilitarian purposes. As a native species, it also supports local ecosystems by providing shelter and food for birds and insects, making it both a practical and ecologically beneficial choice in its native habitat.
