Potentilla indica, commonly referred to as the Indian strawberry, is a mat-forming perennial herbaceous plant in the rose family (Rosaceae). Native to parts of Asia, it has been widely introduced to other regions and often grows in lawns, woodlands, and along roadsides. The plant is well-known for its trifoliate leaves, which resemble those of true strawberries (Fragaria species), and for its distinctive yellow, five-petaled flowers that bloom from spring through fall. Unlike the white flowers of true strawberries, the yellow blossoms of Potentilla indica help distinguish it in mixed plantings or natural settings. Ornamental in appearance, Potentilla indica is sometimes used in gardens for groundcover due to its attractive foliage and colorful fruits, as well as its ability to suppress weeds. It spreads via stolons or runners, quickly forming dense mats that can cover bare ground or compete with other low-growing plants. Potentilla indica’s tolerance of various soil types, moisture levels, and light conditions—from full sun to partial shade—makes it a hardy and persistent component in many landscapes.
