Cladrastis kentuckea, commonly known as Kentucky yellowwood, is a deciduous tree native to the southeastern United States and valued for its graceful form and striking seasonal interest. This medium-sized tree typically grows 30 to 50 feet tall with an equal or slightly narrower spread, forming a rounded crown with smooth gray bark that resembles that of a beech tree. Its compound leaves, composed of 7 to 11 leaflets, emerge a bright green in spring, turn a lush deep green in summer, and transform into brilliant golden-yellow in autumn, providing exceptional fall color. In late spring, mature trees produce pendulous clusters of fragrant, pea-like white flowers, sometimes reaching up to 12 inches long, creating a spectacular display reminiscent of wisteria. These blooms are followed by flat, bean-like pods that persist into winter, adding subtle textural interest. Kentucky yellowwood prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils and thrives in full sun to partial shade, though it grows best in sheltered locations protected from harsh winds. Notably, this species is relatively low-maintenance, tolerant of urban conditions, and free from major pests or diseases, making it an excellent choice for parks, large gardens, and residential landscapes. Its strong branching structure and smooth, elegant bark provide winter appeal, while its rarity and slow growth contribute to its desirability as an ornamental specimen. Hardy in zones 4-8.
